Mark Storor supported six small commissions for artists to work in partnership with local people in Jaywick over a period of five days, leading to a sharing event in July 2024.

Invited artists were: Sarah Allen, Martha Armitage, David Brown, Lucy Chapman, John Costi and Danni Willis.

The focus of each project was determined by the artist pairs, with grief, histories, myth, the future, identity and collective making forming the basis of the enquiries. In such a small amount of time, the pairs got to know each other, lost and found connections, crafting their conversations in different ways with each other and different people as they spent time in the town. In the final sharing event it was evident how rich a process this had been, how each partner leaned on the other to take creative risks and to find form for the complexities of their concerns and understandings. Work made included a new song, Jaywick Fayre, a badge sale in a local school, performances on the beach and a stall at Clacton Pride.

Participant comments:

"I had the feeling of something I thought I couldn't achieve and did it without thinking. I felt truly seen"

"Before this project I had no interest in art, but I took it up and ever since then my confidence as a lesbian within the LGBTQ+ community has just gone up, up and up. I was able to be more open at work with the young people I work with, which lets them be more open with me"
